The Struve Geodetic Arc is a unique monument of science and technology of the 19th century, which was created in order to determine the size and shape of the Earth. It brings together 10 countries of the world.

The Arc is made up of 265 geodetic points, which were laid in the period from 1816 to 1855 and named after its founder — the famous Russian astronomer and surveyor of the time Vasily Struve.

The military surveyor general Karl Tener was directly involved in the fieldwork. Under his leadership the geodesic work was performed by Iosif Hodzko. He was a scientist, a surveyor and a topographer, who conducted geodetic triangulation in western Latvia, Lithuania, Grodno and Minsk provinces.

From 31 points, laid in the territory of Belarus in the 19th century, modern Belarusian surveyors found and recovered 19.

In 2005 34 points of the Struve Geodetic Arc were included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. Five of them are located in the territory of the preset-day Belarus.

The project was prepared in cooperation with the State Committee on Property of the Republic of Belarus.
