Vitsebsk is the second oldest city in Belarus after Polatsk and the third most populous. The official year of its foundation is 974. In the Old Russian Chronicles the town is first mentioned under the year 1021. Modern Vitsebsk is a regional centre of the republic. The Vitsebsk region borders on three countries and has a developed road infrastructure. It is a large industrial region of Belarus. The most important industries are engineering, metalworking, woodworking, electronic, light and food industries. The Vitsebsk region has a rich cultural heritage — more than 3 thousand monuments of archeology, history, culture and architecture. The Vitsebsk region is a birthplace of the famous international festival of arts "Slavianski Bazaar in Vitebsk". |
