The "Reserves" issue continues a series of postage stamps on the RCC subjects, the distinctive feature of which is the reproduction of the RCC emblem in their design and on philatelic products. Today in Belarus, there are two state reserves: The Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve and the Polesye State Radiation-Ecological Reserve. The Berezinsky Biosphere Reserve is one of the oldest nature protection territories of the highest rank in our country. It was created on January 30, 1925 for the protection and breeding of rare species of animals and birds. Today this is the only place where the "Big European Five" of large mammals live — the bison, bear, elk, wolf and lynx: only here you can see all of them at the same time. The Polesye State Radiation-Ecological Reserve was established on July 18, 1988 in the territories of radioactive contamination zones after the Chernobyl disaster. It is a place of rehabilitation of the natural territory, a site for scientific research and is practically closed to tourists. The reserve staff includes more than 700 employees. 40 of them are engaged in the implementation of a special scientific program. |
