The Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre was established in September 1920 on the base of the First Association of Belarusian Drama and Comedy. Its first artistic director was Florian Zhdanovich. It was named then as the Belarusian State Theatre (BST). In 1926 the BST was named BST-1 (Belarusian state theaters were opened in Vitebsk — BST-2 and in Gomel — BST-3). In 1944 its director Lev Litvinov staged the famous "Paulinka". The same year the theater was named after the great Belarusian poet and playwright Yanka Kupala. In 1955 the theatre was awarded the “Academic” status and in 1993 — the “National” status. In spring 2013 the doors of the theater were opened after the complete renovation. The current repertoire is wide enough. Performances are held in the Belarusian language. The project was prepared in cooperation with the Yanka Kupala National Academic Theatre. |
