The need to receive news from other places and countries dates back to ancient times. Initially, the delivery of written and oral messages was carried out by messengers or ambassadors. Stamp No.1344 depicts the postal route Vіlna — Maladzeczna — Mensk — Barysau — Drutsk — Orsha — Smalensk. The route was approved for messengers and ambassadors by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Zhigimont the Old in 1528. The stamp also shows a horse messenger. Stamp No.1345 depicts the postal route Krakow — Warsaw — Goradnya — Vilna, approved by the Grand Duke of Lithuania Stefan Batory in 1583. Against the background of the map there is a messenger holding a road sheet — a special travel document that noted the date, time and direction of departure of the messenger. The project was prepared on the materials of the Historical Information Centre of Postal Service of RUEP “Belpochta” (fragments of drawings by V. Stashchaniuk) and in cooperation with the Institute of History of the National Academy of Sciences of Belarus. |
